Like i said before Singapore was established by BE to be military support base for Pommies gunboats and opium warehouses.
BE must hv base in this narrow strip to blockade any Chinese gunboats and shipload of Chinese opium heading to the West to begin the Yellow Peril.
BE secured Labuan which is on the opposite side of Singapore. Then went on to secure Penang island on the northern side of Malacca. Either ways can destroyed Chinese gunboats in these sea routes.
