Other public hospitals struggle with overcrowded emergency departments, but Alexandra Hospital has the opposite problem.

Its 24-hour acute care clinic, which is equipped to handle all but the most specialised emergencies, sees fewer than two patients an hour - although it is built to handle around 100 patients a day.

The reason, said Dr Annitha Annathurai, who heads its emergency medicine department, is that few people know that the hospital is open for business.

Closed in June 2015 for renovations, Alexandra began opening in phases from August that year. Its 24-hour acute care clinic opened last April with little fanfare.

"A lot of people are not aware that Alexandra Hospital is still functioning," said Dr Annitha.

"Actually, there's still an important facility here."

The hospital is now being run by a team from Sengkang Health, although they will move to Sengkang General Hospital next year when the new building is ready. Alexandra Hospital will then be handed over to the National University Health System.

The 24-hour acute care clinic can handle ailments often seen at full-fledged accident and emergency (A&E) departments, such as cuts, fractures and infections.

However, it does not receive Singapore Civil Defence Force emergency ambulances. It also does not admit those with severe medical conditions - such as heart attacks - or those who need specialised care, such as burn victims or children. But such patients will not be turned away.

Dr Annitha said: "Usually, we assess the situation, stabilise the patient, and then transfer them to another hospital."

Alexandra's low patient load means that wait times can be remarkably short. Public hospital A&E departments typically treat upwards of 300 patients daily, but Alexandra's clinic sees only 30.

Patients at the acute care clinic typically get to consult a doctor within 30 minutes, while the median waiting time for admission to a ward is less than 1½ hours. In comparison, said Dr Annitha, the wait is around an hour for a doctor's consultation at most other hospitals.

At the other six public general hospitals, the median waiting time for admission to a ward generally fluctuated between one and three hours last week. It spiked to more than four hours at Tan Tock Seng Hospital on two days, according to Health Ministry statistics.

Mr Shajahan Maideen, who went to Alexandra's acute care clinic last Saturday for a leg infection, is still warded there.

"I was at the hospital 10 to 15 years ago, so I made the decision to go to the acute care clinic," said the 50-year-old senior boarding officer, who waited around 1½ hours for a bed. "The service was fast and efficient."

Dr Annitha said that some patients go to the clinic because they cannot find a general practitioner who is open late at night.

"We can start them on intravenous fluids and monitor them, for example," she said. "We allow for all of this under one roof, which is not available in the GP setting."

Annitha was my classmate in medical school. I have worked at AH A&E before. It was and still is the least frequented A&E in Singapore. Good if you are a locum. I think the main reason is that people are worried whether AH can treat them properly or not. Many emergencies like stroke and heart attack cannot be managed at AH patients have to o be transferred to NUH. So why go to AH in the first place? The golden hour principle applies. AH is ok for minor trauma as the article suggested. They have orthopaedics but note no hand or microsurgery. AH used to be a big money spinner by treating insurance covered foreign national construction workers with injuries. Those with finger or thumb amputations would be offered terminalization rather than replantation ( which has to be done at NUH HRM department). Leg amputations same. They come to Singapore to build the infrastructure get injured we close up the wounds pay them some money and ship them home with missing body parts. That is part of the story of how Singapore built a first world infrastructure. Using third world values on labor rights and supply.

They are having a PE disaster....the ER is already too quiet for some reasons, even SCDF ambulances don't make a "landing", they now use an AH NEH in the picture to promote "confidence" & that is not helping much...

You get a "by golly" Ah Moh nurse, in the picture...the ambulance will come as far as JB & some even say...BATAM!:D

Don't think so....SGH, TTSH has their share of WWII stories, so is Middleton hospital. AH most likely due to lack of publicity & the nearest hospital in that are is SGH. I am puzzle why the ah neh says the SCDF ambulance don't even make a stop there?, the nearest SCDF is just round the corner after Queensway Shopping Centre, the former Alexandra Fire Station..now SCDF with ambulances...there are so so near, yet they will go do far to SGH...speaks volume about the staffing standard of AH right?...must be full of locum, houseman, & testing & training grounds for all the "other nationalities" medical personnel they employ....that is why the SCDF next door...so near, yet go so far...:p

It was previously announced that they were supposed to close Alexandra Hospital down and moving it to the newer Jurong East, and was reported that some departments already moved. I wonder why it is still not closed or being rebuilded.

I think when it comes to medical emergencies not all SCDF locations have the staff or facilities to handle.

Had a sick relative who had a serious illness & when the SCDF was notified of the emergency, had to wait for the crew from the central fire station to arrive.

The 1st to arrive was the guy on motor cycle. Then the ambulance with the qualified personnel arrived. Even though there was a SCDF branch nearby, had to wait for the people from the Central Fire station because I think there are not enough skilled medics in Spore or maybe it would cost too much $ to have medical staff in all SCDF locations?

Cost is one thing, but the Indian woman, said even the SCDF ambulance, don't stop at AH!....if you know Alexandra Hospital, next to it is Queensway Shopping Centre & next to the shopping centre is the former Alexandra Fire Station ( it had been there for ages) & the fire station is now SCDF...all it need to do is to come out of the premises, straight down the traffic light, turn right & then turn right...it is AH.

But the go all the way to SGH....ha ha ha....:D
