In the west, elected gov't are constantly under scrutiny from the press. A free press promotes democracy, good gov't, prevent corruption and make elected officials accountable. The Singapore Gov't restrictions on free press can give rise to nepotism, corruption, incompetence and abuse of power. The social media is now the only outlet for the general public to air their grievances. The problems people face losing their livelihood to foreigners due to lower pay or any other reasons are real. Netizens attack on Anton is deeper than 1 angmoh insulting the poor, it's the huge social problems created by the massive influx of foreign workers that have a great impact of Singaporeans. Workers and school students can't get on buses because they are full during rush hours face agony every day. MRT breaking down affect people's lives. Anger and frustration have been building up for some time because of PAP policy for economic growth at the expense of people happiness. The elites in PAP or board members at SBS/MRT do not use public transport.
It's time that the PAP accepts a freer social media and deal with the real problems, not restrict the people's voice. You cannot continue to play your golf game on wide fairway, no bunker, no water hazards, flat green and no trees because in real life it doesn't exist. Face the challenges head on and deal with the problems, don't hide behind restricted media and think that the people will be happy. Get out of the kitchen if you can't bear the heat. Set KPI for transport system, measure it and publish it. If the outcome is not satisfactory, be prepared to fire the Transport Minister and bring in someone better.
And lose their multi million dollar salaries and pensions?
