North Korea 'test fires short-range missiles'

North Korea has tested several short-range missiles, according to reports from South Korea.
They were fired from the Hodo peninsula in the east of the country, said South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Last month Pyongyang said it had test-fired what it described as a new "tactical guided weapon".
That was the first launch since the Vietnam summit between the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, and US President Trump, which ended without agreement.
Several short-range projectiles were fired, which flew for between 70km and 200km, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said, as quoted by South Korea's Yonhap news agency.
Hodo has been used in the past for launching cruise missiles and long-range artillery testing.
According to the North Korea news agency (KCNA), April's test of a new "tactical guided weapon" was overseen by Mr Kim himself. It said the test was "conducted in various modes of firing at different targets", which analysts believe means the weapon could be launched from land, sea or air.
It is unclear if that weapon was a missile, but most observers agree that it was probably a short-range weapon.
Last year, Mr Kim said he would stop nuclear testing and would no longer launch intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Nuclear activity appears to be continuing, however, and satellite images of North Korea's main nuclear site last month showed movement, suggesting the country could be reprocessing radioactive material into bomb fuel.
The country claims it has developed a nuclear bomb small enough to fit on a long-range missile, as well as ballistic missiles that could potentially reach the mainland US.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has launched an unidentified short-range missile, a South Korean military official confirmed to NBC News.
The missile launched shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday off the eastern area on the Hodo Bando peninsula. South Korean and U.S. authorities are analyzing the details concerning the missile launch, according to the military official.

National Security Advisor John Bolton has "fully briefed" President Donald Trump on the launch, a senior administration official told NBC News Friday night.

Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un were unable to negotiate a denuclearization deal during a summit in Vietnam in February.
The president indicated at the time that the discussions stalled over Kim's demand that all sanctions be lifted in exchange for concessions on Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

Researchers at Beyond Parallel, a project sponsored by the defense think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, found in March that North Korea was pursuing the "rapid rebuilding" of the long-range rocket site at Sohae Launch Facility.
Beyond Parallel reported that the activity at Sohae, photographed on March 2, is "evident at the vertical engine test stand and the launch pad's rail-mounted rocket transfer structure."
"The activity they are undertaking now is consistent with preparations for a test, though the imagery thus far does not show a missile being moved to the launch pad," Victor Cha, one of the authors of the report, said.

North Korea fires an unidentified short-range missile

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Saturday fired an unidentified short-range missile from its eastern coast, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said, a likely sign of Pyongyang's growing frustration at stalled diplomatic talks with Washington over its nuclear arsenal.
South Korean and U.S. authorities are analyzing the details, but if it is confirmed as a firing of a banned ballistic missile, it will be the first such launch since the North's November 2017 test of an intercontinental ballistic missile. That year saw a string of increasingly powerful weapons tests from the North, and a belligerent response from President Donald Trump that had many in the region fearing war.
The firing Saturday comes amid a diplomatic breakdown that has followed the failed summit earlier this year between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over the North's pursuit of nuclear bombs that can accurately target the U.S. mainland. Experts believe that the North has viable shorter range nuclear armed missiles but still needs more tests to perfect its longer-range weapons.
The South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North's missile was fired from Wonsan on the nation's east coast.
During the diplomacy that followed a rocky 2017, Kim Jong Un said that the North would not test nuclear devices or ICBMs.
This short-range missile would not violate that self-imposed moratorium. It may instead be a way to register his displeasure with Washington and the state of talks meant to provide sanctions relief for disarmament without having the diplomacy collapse.

North Korea has fired several short-range missiles eastward from the city of Wonsan on its east coast, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.
The missiles went off at 9:06 a.m. on Saturday from the east coast town of Wonsan in the direction of the Sea of Japan (known in the Koreas as the East Sea) on Saturday, the agency reported, quoting South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The projectiles flew between 70 and 200km.
South Korean and US authorities are reportedly analyzing the firing.

Disarmament talks between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump collapsed in Hanoi earlier this year when the US leader refused to relax sanctions without Pyonyangs unconditional denuclearization.
Following a summit in Vladivostok last month, Vladimir Putin affirmed Russia’s support for gradual nuclear disarmament in exchange for sanctions relief.
Putin and Trump discussed the issue in a phone call on Friday, agreeing on the need to pursue denuclearization, with Trump pushing Putin to join the US in applying pressure on Kim to disarm.

Thawing relations between North and South Korea have seemingly reversed their course in the aftermath of the failed Hanoi summit, with Pyongyang pulling out of a celebration of the anniversary of last year’s historic summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Kim in the DMZ, and ceasing to attend weekly joint meetings.
The North has also slammed the South for ramping up its participation in “war games” with the US, warning lat week that a “corresponding response” was imminent in the face of such “acts of perfidy.” The US and South Korea began two weeks of joint air force exercises last Monday, a more low-key version of the annual Max Thunder drills.
North Korea conducted 17 missile tests in 2017, provoking international outcry when several of the missiles passed over Japan. Last year, Kim began dismantling the North’s missile and rocket test site, a process that has reportedly been reversed in the wake of the failed Hanoi nuclear talks.

Japan and South Korea should fire some missiles towards North Korea in response.

Powers are ALWAYS UNEQUAL and that is the perfect way to ensure that ONLY FITTEST WILL SURVIVE - not the rest.

Kim got nuke. Japs and Kim Chin don't, can fire missiles and see the final out come, that is the most globally educational fact, all must learn, and remember. Modern Civilization is nothing but a STUPID SUICIDE cum GENOCIDE for TOTAL EXTINCTION.

North Korea test several flying objects, flying distance 70-200 km

Yonhap News Agency reported today that South Korea’s Joint Staff Headquarters (Joint) has reported that the North Korean Army has launched several unknown short-range flying objects in the northeast direction from 9:06 to 27 in the north of the North Korean mountain. The flight distance is about 70-200 kilometers. (Wang Changwei reported in Seoul)

South Korea’s Joint Staff Officer said in an initial release that North Korea fired short-range missiles and later modified them into short-range flying objects. The United Nations said that the United States and South Korea are analyzing the details and maintaining a high level of alertness under the close cooperation of South Korea and the United States.

If the flying object is a ballistic missile, it is North Korea’s launch of the missile after the intercontinental missile "Mars-15" was launched on November 29, 2017. However, South Korean military personnel said that North Korea’s test was not a ballistic missile.

Some analysts believe that the United States and North Korea leaders held talks in Hanoi in February this year, and North Korea’s launch of the flying object is a position that the United States emphasizes insisting on pressure on North Korea to show [never yield].

On April 17, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited the new tactical guided weapons shooting test. However, the United States and South Korea believe that Kim Jong-un’s new tactical guided weapon that guided the test was a [snail] missile with a range of more than 20 kilometers or a ground-to-ground guided weapon instead of a ballistic missile.

SEOUL: North Korea has conducted a "strike drill" for multiple launchers and tactical guided weapons into the East Sea in a military drill supervised by leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday, the North's state media reported on Sunday (May 5).

The purpose of the drill was to test performance of "large-caliber long-range multiple rocket launchers and tactical guided weapons by defence units," the Korean Central News Agency said, implying that the latest firing was not the long-range ballistic missiles that have been seen as a threat to the United States.

Kim gave an order of firing and stressed the need to "increase the combat ability so as to defend the political sovereignty and economic self-sustenance" of North Korea in the face of threats and invasions, the report said.

The statement came a day after the latest firing, which analysts interpreted as an attempt to exert pressure on Washington to give ground in negotiations to end the North's nuclear programme after a summit in February ended in failure.

"Yes, the tests were the most serious since the end of 2017, but this is largely a warning to Trump that he could lose the talks unless Washington takes partial denuclearization steps offered by Kim," said Shin Beom-chul, a senior fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. "A resumption of long-range test could be next unless Kim gets what he wants soon."

North Korean had maintained a freeze in nuclear and ballistic missiles testing in place since 2017, which U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly pointed out as an important achievement from his engagement with Pyongyang.

The latest firing prompted Seoul to call on its communist neighbour to "stop acts that escalate military tension on the Korean Peninsula" on Saturday, while Trump said in a Twitter post that he was still confident he could have a deal with Kim.

"I believe that Kim Jong Un fully realizes the great economic potential of North Korea, & will do nothing to interfere or end it," Trump wrote. "He also knows that I am with him & does not want to break his promise to me. Deal will happen!"

The projectiles, fired from the east coast city of Wonsan around 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) flew about 70 kms to 200 kms (44-124 miles) in a north-easterly direction, South Korea's Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement on Saturday.

The South Korean military initially described it as a missile launch, but subsequently gave a vaguer description and said it was conducting joint analysis with the United States of the latest launches.

Experts say the projectiles appeared to come from multiple rocket launchers, and were not ballistic missiles.

Talks stalled after a second summit between Kim and Trump in Hanoi in February failed to produce a deal to end Pyongyang’s nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.

North Korea demanded Washington to lift the U.S.-led sanctions in return for a partial dismantling of its nuclear weapons programme, while the United States wanted the quick rollback of the North’s entire nuclear weapons programme.

The North's last missile launch was in November 2017, when it tested an intercontinental ballistic missile. Soon after that missile test, the North declared that its nuclear force was complete, after which Pyongyang extended an olive branch to the South and the United States.
