SingTel probed for violating telecom laws in India

SingTel has come under a probe by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a violation of telecom laws.

CBI received a complaint from the Department of Telecom (DoT) that the Singapore telco had offered international long distance (ILD) services without a license, reported Business Standard.

The DoT had brought the issue before the government on 29 November last year, and the matter is now under investigation by CBI.

Sources indicated that SingTel infringed the law when they charged local customers in India without having a telecom license between 2005 and 2009. This was in violation of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.

Two other Indian telcos, Bharti Airtel and Tata Communications, have already been slapped fines of almost S$13 million each for having arrangements with SingTel, under the recommendation of an internal DoT committee.
