This is what the 60% get for voting for PAP. They have not changed, still telling white lies to mislead the Sinkies.
Tony Tan has the qualities to lead: Nathan
04:47 AM Jun 24, 2011
by Evelyn Choo
SINGAPORE - Having worked with Dr Tony Tan when he was Defence Minister from 1995 to 2003 and Coordinating Minister for Security and Defence from 2003 to 2005, Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing described Dr Tan as a strategic thinker who is "always very caring about all the people who work with him".
Major-General (NS) Chan had served in the army for more than two decades, rising to the rank of Chief of Army. Speaking to reporters yesterday at the launch of the Standard Chartered Marathon, MG (NS) Chan said Dr Tan has "very broad and wide, long-term vision" and he always has the "interests of the country in mind".
He added: "The other characteristic is that he's always very caring about all the people who work with him ... he has a very simple philosophy that if you take care of the people, the people will take care of the mission."
Yesterday, incumbent President S R Nathan said that Dr Tan has the qualities to lead the country. He also described Dr Tan as a remarkable man and wished him well in the Presidential Election, which must be held by Aug 31.
Mr Nathan, 87, was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore event.
Mr Nathan, who became the Republic's second Elected President when he was first elected in 1999, also said that he will decide whether to seek a third term within the next fortnight.
He said: "Everybody's asking me that question. I'm having sleepless nights trying not to answer. So not before long, you'll get the answer."

Tony Tan "suitable candidate", says Goh Chok Tong
TOKYO: Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said former deputy prime minister Tony Tan is an eminently suitable candidate for Singapore president.

"I welcome his announcement he wants to contest in the presidential election," Mr Goh said.

"He is eminently a suitable candidate. Going forward, people will decide who will be next president of Singapore. I welcome his candidacy."

Mr Goh was speaking to Singapore media in Tokyo, after receiving one of the country's highest honours from the Emperor of Japan.

Emperor Akihito presented 10 recipients the highest order of the Japanese decoration -- the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun -- at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

In congratulating them, the emperor expressed his appreciation for the contributions they've made to his country, its society and to its people.

Mr Goh was recognised for his contribution to Japan's launch of its first economic partnership agreement (EPA) with Singapore in 2002.

In addition, he established the Japan Singapore symposium which became a biennial event.

"I felt gratified. Gratified in a sense that, my contribution to Japan-Singapore relations has endured my tenure as prime minister," Mr Goh said.

"It's been seven years since I've stepped down as prime minister and the contribution is recognised by DPJ government for my work done under the LDP government.

"In that sense, this long relationship is recognised by the Japanese government".

Mr Goh was also congratulated by lawmakers he met during his four-day stay in Tokyo, including leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party and the New Komeito.

They discussed Japan's challenges after the March 11 disasters.

Mr Goh asked them to use the lesson Japan has learned from its nuclear meltdown to raise global awareness of nuclear safety, regulations, inspections, expertise and capabilities.

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he has no doubt that former deputy prime minister Dr Tony Tan will be a unifying figure for all citizens and will bring honour and credit to Singapore if he is elected as Singapore's next president.

Mr Lee said this on Saturday in response to questions from the media on how he sees Dr Tan as a candidate. Dr Tan had announced on Thursday that he would be running for president.

In response to a question on whether Dr Tan had informed him of his decision, Mr Lee replied that Dr Tan had informed him, as Chairman of the Government Investment Corporation (GIC), that he would be resigning from GIC to contest the Presidential Election as an independent candidate.

Mr Lee said Dr Tan did not need his permission, nor did he ask for it.

To a question on how he sees the upcoming Presidential Election, Mr Lee replied that the president is a key person in Singapore's system of government.

Mr Lee said that as Head of State, the president represents the country and all Singaporeans. He also has important constitutional functions, especially through his custodial powers over reserves and key appointments.

Mr Lee added that the president must carry himself with dignity and discharge his duties with judgement and integrity.
