Afghan soldier defuses suicide bomber's vest

An Afghan bomb disposal expert defused a suicide bomber's explosive vest as he was still wearing it ahead of an attempted attack in the province of Jalalabad.

Images show how Afghan security forces captured the would-be bomber and hog-tied him to prevent him detonating the device. The bomb squad was then called in to disarm him, the expert taking his life in his hands as he approached the man armed with nothing but a wire cutter.

It was a scene reminiscent of Kathryn Bigelow's acclaimed 2008 film The Hurt Locker, which centres on a US bomb disposal unit in Iraq. In the Oscar-winning movie, the lead character William James is called out to disarm a bomb vest which has been strapped to the chest of an innocent Iraqi civilian; however he is unable to defuse it in time and has to abandon the man, who is killed when the bomb explodes.

In this case, however, the courageous Afghan expert managed to successfully disarm the device and the man was taken away for questioning.
