Thought of buying the CANON PowerShot SX510 HS for casual use because both my PANASONIC and SONY compact cameras were recently soaked in sea water whilst on a trip to Taiwan last week.

Any advice or recommendation by photography brothers here would be appreciated. My budget is around S$400 for a compact digital camera. Will not consider SONY compact camera because its image quality is not up to expectation.

Singveld highly recommends the sony rx 100.
Thanks, but over my budget, only 3.6x optical zoom and no WiFi. Not really value for money leh, except maybe for the advantage of the large 1.0" CMOS sensor.

that is true, the next step after RX100 II is canon S110.
If S110 match your budget, it is a good buy.

Finally, over the weekend, I settled for the PANASONIC LUMIX TZ40 @ S$499 + S$29 for a spare battery. By utilizing LEICA lens, the sharpness and color reproduction from the TZ40 is better than the CANON SX510HS.

Did you judge based on RAW mode or did you save in JPG format?

They are in JPG format. If I'm not mistaken, these 2 cameras (CANON SX510HS and PANASONIC TZ40) cannot save in RAW mode.

When you compare JPG images straight out from a camera, a lot of the differences are based on the settings of the JPG eg saturation, white balance, colour space etc. It is therefore very difficult to compare apples and apples.

What I did was to set both the cameras on their AI (fully auto) mode and took a picture on each camera on the same subject. Thereafter, I can compare the color clarity and also especially the sharpness when I zoomed in on the captured photo on their own respective LCD screens. In order to be fair to the cameras and myself, I repeated 2 more times with different subjects taken and all appeared with similar results.

I think that is the best one can do whilst in the shop. Of course, they cannot allow you to bring the cameras outdoor for taking comparison shots. Anyway, these are also not high end cameras and as long as it fits my general purpose and budget, I'm ok with it.

it is call leica lens, but massproduct in japan, only designs by german engineer

The small LCD screens on the cameras add another variable. The colour saturation and brightness can be adjusted on those too. ;)

Ultimately, if the consumer is happy, that is all that matters at that price range.

Why no make in China? Leica will laugh all the way to the bank.

if you gave PRC the blueprint and how to build it, in a year, there will be other chinese company making the same product at 1/10 your selling price.
so should leica build a plant in china, hell NO.

If leica does tat it wikk shoot itself in the foot n head. No one will pay premium for a made in tiongland leica.

For those leica made by Panasonic. I wont touch them too. Much too overprice.compared to other cameras. But for a real leica like an M9. There is no comparison.
