You would have noticed that when you update your Adobe Flash, it will automatically also install McAfee Free Scan, without asking for your permission.

Here's how to avoid this pest McAfee Free Scan from installing.

1. When running the update, click Cancel.
2. The installer will prompt you if you wish NOT to install all other applications except Adobe Flash.
3. Click "Yes".

Noticed how devious Adobe is here? First, it never asked you permission, then it uses a misleading instruction, knowing that most will click "No", believing that it means not to install McAfee Free Scan.

If you're still snooked and unwillingly installed McAfee Free Scan, go to Control Panel, then Remove Software and remove it.

:D

McAfee AV is the worst AV to use.

I remember getting hit with a virus and buying McAfee to remove it, only later to realise my PC would take forever to boot up and doing things on it soon came to a crawl. Not only that, it seemed to have an issue with a back door where trojans could actually get into my PC and all of a sudden, my browsers would get hijacked to all kinds of XXX rated sites.

Problem solved by reformatting the entire disk and reinstall, and this time using a more well regarded AV.

I never had any problems with McAfee over the many years, from the days it was a 'pirate' favorite & using their paid copies for years. The only grouse I had was that, you uninstall their products, it leaves 'footprints' in hidden files on the PC. After much protest by users, you can download their utility to remove them. Norton by Symantec is the worse, it prevents you from installing other ant-virus programs, that is why I come across any trial version on any PC I immediately uninstall & get their utility on line ( now they have it) to delete all trails.

I usually have a first line defence with the free Virus Defender from Microsoft & then McAfee...

Sometimes I get a feeling that these Anti virus companies are paying people to release viruses, so that, we will be buying their programs & renewing it annually..:p

Yea, it's true that you have to watch out for such small things these softwares try to load on you unwittingly. Mind the small boxes which have to be unchecked - things like installing Ask toolbar, make bing the default search engine or homepage etc.

I have been using Bitdefender AV for a year now. No problems so far, and I'll probably continue. I found that McAfee is pretty aggressive and blocks more sites than nec, to the point of nannying you to death. Like torrent sites and Funshion will get "Whoa! Are you sure you want to go there?" something like that.

always read instructions even it is very convenient to just click "yes" or "Next"

I surprised, never know they had gone so low. I believe in the States where they come from they would have been sued. Used McAfee long time ago for many years no problem like this in the past. But after changing to Bitdefender I simply love it as its very easy to use and don't take up so much space and CPU time while its working. Lucky now using Mac no need all these anymore.

haha...rule of thumb, always read what you install, and even during the process installation. and you actually using mac without any internet antivirus...you are one very brave soul...:p

Sam will tell you to GOOGLE...in the past yes..now no! there are anti virus software available for MAC even Mcafee has it..

Always turn off automatic updates. Especially for Microsoft and Adobe products.

Automatic updates are as stupid as HOTA... doing things without your control and permission.

it also changes my default browser. help!

First, go remove the McAfee Free Scan if you've already unwllingly installed it.
After that, you need to protect yourself from browser hijackers. There're many ways to prevent future hijackings of the default browser. Here is just one way to try out if it works for you. If not, post here again and I will suggest another alternative.

When one updates the Adobe Flash, you cannot untick anything, that's what I'm warning you guys here and a method of how to avoid installing McAfee.

Untick the McAfee Security Scan as shown in the screenshot if you do not want McAfee.
