Accused of siphoning money

By Elena Chong

A MAN accused last week of pocketing $138,000 from his company was accused of six more similar charges, bringing the total amount to $984,361.

Xie Ming Liang, 55, who was a deputy general manager of Hoo Huat Engineering, allegedly siphoned between $54,920 and $118,751 from the company in Jurong over the last six years.

He is said to have been entrusted with the marine company's sales collections between 2004 and March 2010 when he misappropriated the amounts.

Bail of $1 million was offered. He will appear in court again on Jan 14.

The maximum penalty for the offence - before 2008 - is seven years' jail and a fine, and after February 2008 - 15 years and a fine.

Ex-deputy GM jailed for pocketing $1m

By Elena Chong

A FORMER executive of a marine and offshore engineering company who pocketed almost $1 million over six years was jailed for six years on Thursday.

Xie Ming Liang, 56, admitted to three charges of misappropriating $674,705 from Hoo Huat Engineering at Pioneer Sector Walk between 2007 and 2009.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ma Han Feng said that Xie - who joined the company in 2002 as a marketing and operation manager - collected payments from clients and handed the money over to the company.

When he was promoted to deputy general manager in 2008, he carried out collecting payments. In 2007, the managing director of the company discovered his misdeeds but decided to give him a chance to turn over a new leaf.

Instead of making use of this opportunity, Xie went on to commit further criminal breach of trust offences.

Of the total $984,361 misappropriated, Xie paid back $7,000. He spent the money on gambling and other personal debts.

Man jailed for pocketing company money
By Shaffiq Alkhatib | Posted: 26 May 2011 1621 hrs

SINGAPORE: A gambling addict and former deputy general manager of a marine and offshore engineering firm was on Thursday jailed six years after misappropriating almost a million dollars of the company's money.

Fifty-six-year-old Xie Ming Liang, who used to work for Hoo Huat Engineering, pleaded guilty to three of the seven charges against him.

Xie committed the offences between 2004 and last year.

The company's managing director Seah Chiong Soon first found out that Xie had been helping himself to the firm's money in 2007, for his own use.

Instead of reporting him to the authorities, Hoo Huat Engineering decided to give him a chance to turn over a new leaf.

But Xie abused their trust again and continued misappropriating money from them.

The company manager Goh Seng Huat finally lodged a police report against him on December 2 last year.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ma Han Feng said Xie joined the firm in July 2002 as a marketing and operation manager and was tasked to collect payments from clients.

He then had to hand over the monies to the company.

Xie took on this responsibility even after he was promoted to deputy general manager in early 2008.

DPP Ma added only S$7,000 was restituted from the total amount taken.

Xie had used the money he misappropriated to gamble and settle his personal debts.

Defence counsel Kesavan Nair told the court in his mitigation plea that Xie was a "severe gambling addict" and the habit "consumed him".

The lawyer said Xie also has no means of making any further restitution.
