British teacher faces a year in jail for having lunch with married man in Abu Dhabi

A British teacher faces up to a year in an Abu Dhabi jail after she was arrested for having lunch with a married man.
The unnamed woman was introduced to the Syrian man by a male colleague, who ate with them but then left them alone in the man's house in the oil-rich Arab emirate.
But when the man's wife, who had been arguing with her husband, discovered that he was dining with another woman she demanded that the pair be prosecuted.

The British expat appeared in court on Wednesday, charged with being alone in the company of a man other than her husband or close relative, and drinking alcohol without a licence.
The case highlights the paradoxical nature of life in the United Arab Emirates, which has a reputation as the party capital of the Middle East despite its strict Islamic culture.

Abu Dhabi Misdemeanours Court heard that the woman visited the Syrian man last Friday in the company of a colleague.
The trio ate lunch together, then the male teacher left the house and the Syrian and the Briton enjoyed a glass of wine after the meal.
Soon afterwards, police arrived at the house to follow up a complaint by the man's wife that he had kicked her out of their home.

The day before, the couple had apparently had an argument which led to the husband ordering the wife to leave.
Police arrested the British teacher and her host for being alone together and drinking alcohol illegally.
The man's wife insisted that officials press charges when she was told that her husband had been drinking with another woman.
If found guilty under the strict legislation, which is inspired by Muslim sharia law, the teacher could be imprisoned for as long as 12 months.
'She is looking at anything between a month in jail or a year for being alone with a man who is not her husband,' a UAE legal expert told the Sun.
'As in so many alcohol cases, it only becomes a problem if someone makes a complaint to the police and they are obliged to act.'
The Syrian man will not be punished for being with the Briton, as it is not a crime for men to socialise with women, but he faces other charges

British woman arrested in Abu Dhabi for having LUNCH with a man who was not her husband

The woman, who teaches in a suburb of the capital, has also been charged with drinking alcohol during the weekend meal

A British woman teacher in Abu Dhabi has been arrested for having lunch at the home of a man who was not her husband.

The woman, who teaches in a suburb of the capital, has also been charged with drinking alcohol during the weekend meal.

The woman appeared at Abu Dhabi Misdemeanours Court where she told a judge that she had only entered the Syrian man’s house after accompanying a male colleague there for lunch.

The court was told that the Syrian, who has also been detained, had thrown his wife out of the house last week.

She left and called police to complain that her husband had forced her out.

When police went to the house the next day to speak to the man they found the British woman enjoying an after-lunch drink with the accused and officers arrested the pair. They have been detained in custody since.

The teacher’s male colleague says he invited the woman to the Syrian’s house and that the two defendants did not know each other before that meeting.

The male teacher had left the home before the police arrived.

The Syrian man’s wife, who is the legal owner of the home, pressed charges against the British woman for entering her property without permission.

She later dropped that charge but the expat teacher is still charged with drinking alcohol without a licence and being alone in the company of a man other than her husband or close

A BRITISH woman teacher was last night facing jail in Abu Dhabi — for having lunch with a married man.
She was accused of breaking Muslim laws which ban couples who are not wed or related being alone together.
The teacher faces a year in prison in the strict Arab emirate plus more time for drinking alcohol without a licence — after cops who burst into her dining companion's house found her enjoying a glass of wine after their meal.
The unnamed teacher was thrown into a filthy cell and was still awaiting news of her fate last night.
She appeared in court on Wednesday and told a judge she had been introduced to the Syrian man earlier in the day by one of her male colleagues who left the pair to finish their meal.
But it was later revealed that the Syrian, who was also in custody, had thrown his wife out of the house after a row last Thursday.
And sources said the vengeful wife pressed charges when told her husband was found alone with the teacher.
A United Arab Emirates legal source said yesterday: “She is looking at anything between a month in jail or a year for being alone with a man who is not her husband.
“As in so many alcohol cases, it only becomes a problem if someone makes a complaint to the police and they are obliged to act.”
British diplomats were trying to free her after her work pal testified he invited her. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware of the arrest of a British national in Abu Dhabi. We are providing consular assistance.”
Many Brits fall foul of the oil-rich UAE’s Sharia law — despite it being a brash playground teeming with nightlife.
Hundreds move to teach expat kids there, lured by sunshine and tax-free pay.

why UN not doing anything about these laws in the middle east?

Amnesty 'outrage' at Saudi paralysis sentence

The law of retribution means the victim can demand his attacker suffers the same punishment as he caused

The reported sentencing of paralysis for a Saudi man as punishment for paralysing another man has been described as "outrageous" by a leading human rights group.

Saudi reports say the 24-year-old man could be paralysed from the waist down if he cannot pay his victim one million riyals (£250,000) in compensation.

Amnesty International says the sentence is a form of torture.

The man has been in prison for 10 years since he stabbed a friend in the back.

Saudi newspapers say Ali al-Khawahir was 14 when he paralysed his friend in the attack in the Eastern Province town of al-Ahsa.

The law of qisas, or retribution, in Saudi Arabia means his victim can demand that he suffers exactly the same punishment as he caused.

"Paralysing someone as punishment for a crime would be torture," said Ann Harrison, Middle East and North Africa deputy director at Amnesty.

"It is time the authorities in Saudi Arabia start respecting their international legal obligations and remove these terrible punishments from the law."

This is the latest example of Saudi Arabia's fundamentalist interpretation of Islamic law attracting international criticism.

Amnesty says the law has seen judicially approved eye-gougings and tooth extractions.

The rights group condemns the practice as tantamount to torture, urging that the latest punishment must not be enforced.

Amnesty's intervention will certainly fuel a growing debate in Saudi Arabia itself over its style of justice, says the BBC's Arab affairs editor, Sebastian Usher.
