A 51-year-old man brutally stabbed to death in an inner Sydney suburb last night has been identified as a 'popular' primary school teacher.

Brian Anthony Liston was stabbed in a random attack at a bus stop in Camperdown.

“The Strathfield South Public School community is deeply saddened by the death of a teacher,” a NSW Department of Education spokesman said.

“He was a popular staff member and much loved by the school community."
