SINGAPORE - An SMRT bus driver fled across the Causeway after the bus he was driving ran over and killed a 60-year-old woman, reported the Shin Min Daily News.

The accident happened this morning at around 9.20am along the junction of Yishun Avenue 2, and Yishun Central 1.

The deceased, Mdm Huang Shu Hong, was believed to be crossing the road after shopping for groceries at the nearby market when she was struck by the bus.

The bus was making a right turn at the traffic junction but it is not clear how the accident occurred.

According to bystanders, the scene of the accident was a gruesome sight, as the wheel of the bus had run over the woman's head.

There was a large pool of blood, locks of hair and a broken pair of spectacles on the road amidst scattered vegetables and joss sticks.

A crack was also clearly visible on the right side of the bus' windshield.

When Mdm Huang's husband got to the scene, he demanded to see her body, but was led away by police officers.

But he recognised Mdm Huang's belongings strewn along the road and broke down in tears.

Police say investigations are ongoing.

Bystanders also reported that the Malaysian driver of the bus number 858 was nowhere to be found after the accident.

According to the Chinese evening daily, which managed to track him down, the driver had fled to Malaysia in fear.

He told the paper that he been working as a bus driver here for two years, and it is the first time he has gotten into an accident.

Speaking to a reporter, the driver said he was very scared at the time, and his mind "blanked out".

But he told the reporter that he is on the way back to Singapore to turn himself in.
