I believe TJS and some others left the SDP and never returned probably because he spotted some latent problems, just like you.

As for why he chose to join an existing party in the first place, I guess it was because he had to keep his political venture under wraps until close to GE 2011, which rules out forming his own party back then. SDP probably offered him the best permutation of location, team and opponent, never mind the party branding.

It was possible that he had contemplated to eventually settle in SDP and play an important role somewhat, but realized that he can't be a successor to the leadership because the leadership was younger than him.

The latent problem is CSJ himself. Under him, there is no way SDP can progress. There is a group of diehard loyalists who are propping up CSJ but the newer members have their reservations. These reservations turned out to be well-founded when CSJ performed his famous act of political masturbation during the PE BE by suggesting that his candidate gets into parliament whilst WP runs the town council. TNP wrongly reported that half the members threatened to resign, but the harshness of the reaction amongst the party members I believe is not very far from that embellished claim.

Just prior to the 2011 GE, there were some old activists who tactfully suggested to CSJ during one of the SDP retreats that CSJ step aside to let new blood take the helm and give SDP a fresh coat of paint. CSJ refused.

TJS cannot function in SDP because he knows he cannot achieve his ambitions in SDP. He wants to be THE MAN, but in SDP, CSJ is THE MAN.
