TOKYO - Nagasaki on Friday marked the 68th anniversary of the atomic bombing by the United States during World War II that turned the Japanese city into an inferno.

Tens of thousands gathered to remember the more than 70,000 people who died instantly in the blast, or of the after-effects in the months and years after the bombing, which hit Nagasaki at 11:02 am local time.

Bells tolled as ageing survivors, relatives, government officials and foreign delegates observed a moment of silence at the time of detonation.

The bombing of Nagasaki came three days after the first-ever atomic blast at Hiroshima, which claimed about 140,000 lives in all. Hiroshima held its own remembrance ceremonies earlier this week.

it is said the US leaders felt morally indebted to the Japanese people because of the atomic bombs. as a result of that, President Truman chose not to adopt a harsh postwar policy on Japan. instead the US gave very generous aid and assistance for the postwar rehabilitation and reconstruction of Japan. the Republic of China, the staunch loyal ally of US during WW2 received much less postwar aid from VJ day to 1949 than Japan. if some of those huge economic aid given to Japan could be given to China then, it will definitely help the Nationalist government in its economic rehabilitation and to stabilize the quick deterioration of its currency. the eventual collapse of China's monetary system resulted in the massive loss of people's support and is a key reason why the Nationalists lost the Chinese mainland to the Communists then.

God did not really punish Japan in a way then.
