SINGAPORE: Workers have identified overloading of work and high-pressure deadlines as the main reasons for not being able to achieve work-life balance in Singapore.

A recent survey on work-life balance in Singapore found that nearly nine out of 10 workers surveyed worked beyond their official hours.

Beyond working hours, 70 per cent chose to complete unfinished work in the office while the remaining 30 per cent chose to bring work home.

The survey by recruiter Jobstreet.com also found that only 30 per cent of the respondents claimed that their companies had initiatives in place to promote work-life balance.

45 per cent indicated that their companies pay lip service to work-life balance with policies in place just for show.

Respondents suggested corporate tax relief and enforcement of policies as steps that the government can take to encourage more companies to promote work-life balance at the workplace.

About 650 workers and 135 employers participated in the survey that was conducted in September.

Work are no meant to be finished. If works' finished, workers aLso finished..

That's when you finished your racing guide book 1st..;)

Today is Monday, I started work at 10, finish my work by 12, had lunch and spend the rest of the day surfing SBF, facebook, youtube. If not for the traffic, I would have gone home earlier to play with my kid.

It's a pity that the government have not done enough work to make the lives of ordinary people better. :(

Bro Ash, here in Oz, folks are expected to go back on time. ;)

Somebody I know had her internship in one of the big 4 Accounting firm in SG. After she graduated, she decided to take up the Sydney accounting firm's offer instead of going back to SG to work for the same firm where she had her internship.

She had a cultural shock when she was told twice by two different managers on her 1st day of work that it is time to go back.

You see, her experience in SG lead her to think that she should not pack up and go home when the clock strike five even though there is hardly anything to do on the 1st day. :o

Thats the huge difference between SG and Oz.

me always wonder what happens when the Secretary General of the party is not voted in as a member of the parliament... who becomes the PM?

Bro jw5, of course the 超级白 have not done enough. They have, in fact, been systematically putting ordinary people at a distinct disadvantage with all the ICT and what not.

Bro zhihau, the Sec Gen of any party can remain as a Sec Gen even if he / she is not elected as a MP during election. ;)

Both positions are not intertwined. They are independent of each other.

Bro Equalisation, age 65 is not static. It could me 72 for that matter. Ditto for the amount they are holding back. It has been raising higher and higher every year.

Same thing in France, it has a 35hr working week, if you work more than 7hrs a day your colleagues will think you're mad, if you keep doing it, they'll zap you & report you to their union & you'll have to go for .. erm, moderation, just like in SBF.:D Always remember, when in rome, do what the romans do..

That's what you get for not having real unions to fight for workers' rights. Instead, you have the tripartite sham NTUC pseudo-union who's shamelessly pro-business.

And those of you who think working hard, clocking 50+ hours per week is a blessing in disguise, go read up on what happened to the horse Boxer in George Orwell's Animal Farm.
