9 arrested for suspected involvement in loansharking activities
SINGAPORE: Police have arrested five men and four women for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
Officers from Jurong Police Division mounted an island-wide operation covering Jurong West, Bukit Batok, River Valley, Marine Terrace and Yishun public housing estates on Wednesday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had opened bank accounts and gave away their automated teller machine (ATM) cards and personal identification numbers (PINs) to loansharks to facilitate their businesses.
In a separate case, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrested a 55-year-old man in the vicinity of Yishun Ring Road on Thursday night.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had assisted loansharks by checking on various debtors' units to confirm that harassment had been carried out.
Four investigations against all the suspects are ongoing. - CNA/xq
