9 arrested for operating & gaming in illegal gambling den

SINGAPORE : Police have arrested nine people for operating and gaming in an illegal gambling den at a shophouse along Geylang Road.

The five-hour operation started on 20 December at about 9.00pm.

Officers from Bedok Police Division raided the shophouse and arrested six men aged 46 to 59 and three women aged 32 to 36.

Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the male suspects, aged 58 years, had rented the shophouse for the purpose of gambling while the remaining suspects are believed to be patrons.

Thirteen modified computers, four jackpot machines and cash amounting to about S$1,214 were also seized.

The 58-year-old suspect and six others will be charged in Court on 24 December.

Two female suspects will be charged in Court on 22 December.

Anyone convicted of an offence of managing a place to be used as a Common Gaming House can be fined a maximum of S$50,000 and jailed a maximum of three years.

As for the players, any person convicted of an offence of gaming in a Common Gaming House, can be fined a maximum of S$5,000 or jailed a maximum of six months or both.
