84-year-old charged for abetting
By Hannah Koh
AN 84-YEAR-OLD woman who owns four shophouse units at Geylang will be charged for allowing her houses to be used as illegal gambling dens despite receiving a stern warning earlier in the year.
The police first conducted checks on the units between December 2009 to April 2010. They found illegal jackpot machines and computers used for on-line casino gaming.
As the gaming operators did not have any valid license to carry on the gaming activities in the premises, they were charged in court under the Common Gaming House Act. The property owner was let off with a stern warning not to permit illegal gambling on her premises again.
But police checks conducted in June and July 2010 showed that illegal gaming activities had resumed.
In view of her failure to ensure that no illegal activity was to continue, the shophouse owner will be charged for abetting in permitting a place to be used as a common gaming house.
