Covid-19 has claimed the life of a restaurant with a 82-year history, now other long-standing eateries are also contemplating their fate.

Red Star Restaurant and Lai Wah Restaurant, household names in their heyday, told TODAY they were unsure for how long more they can sustain their businesses, even as Singapore appears on track to relax the latest round of restrictions that prohibit dining-in come next Sunday (June 13).

This comes on the heels of the permanent closure of heritage brand Swee Kee Eating House last Sunday.

Red Star and Lai Wah are old-school restaurants that are still employing their longtime workers well into their old age, and thus faced some difficulty reskilling their ageing workforce to meet the new demands of doing business amid the pandemic.

But despite their best efforts to catch up with the latest technologies – from introducing fibre broadband at the restaurant to taking orders mainly on food delivery platforms – business had still fallen by up to 90 per cent.

Their food is nothing spectacular, it's quite expensive n there's +10% +7%...I would rather go to a zhi char stall anytime.

Ivermectin! Ivermectin! Eateries that provide ivermectin to customers should be allowed to open. No distancing needed.

Grandmother recipe food restaurants have enough of their heyday....

Blame PAP CECA getting fake professional ahneh that only eat curry fish head in little india.

Where got hope for Singapore where all professional jobs are given to ahneh fish head curry eaters...

Red Star needs to reduce the size of their restaurant space. It's large enough to host wedding receptions, which it did back in the 1980s. Today, other than paupers and losers, most couples would host their wedding receptions either at hotels or swanky colonial looking restaurants.

But meanwhile, curry operators at Race Course Road are laughing to Banks ie Muthu, Apollo, Gayathri,
Banana Leaf

tiagong Thai Pan at Marine Parade also up lorry

Enjoying your return to normalcy so far, Sinkies?

First find out about the origins of Covid-19, before you go on board the technocrats' plans to 'keep you safe'. :roflmao:

Poor management and bad food to blame. If a business cannot pivot to changing times they deserve to be cast aside. No sympathies.

82 year old business still paying rent and they didn't buy the shophouse?
1 month semi lockdown and they have to fold. Bluff who?

I remember there was a dim sum buffet restaurant at Harbourfront Centre in the mid 2000s. I forgot what the name of the restaurant was. It was on one of the higher floors, you had to take a lift from the lobby to get there.

All these franchise food courts probably won't go kaput... they'll just reduce the number of outlets or shift an existing outlet to a location with lower rental.

The sole proprietor small businesses, on the other hand, are fucked.

Seriously, with the recent Fauci email leaks, the draconian lockdown measures should gradually taper off.
