THE government halted bus shuttle service to the two Integrated Resorts (IRs) week before last to discourage locals from gambling.

But this may not discourage Singaporeans from visiting the casinos, going by an an online poll by straitstimes.com.

Of the 202 readers who took the poll, 82 per cent responded 'Yes' to the question: 'Would you still visit the casinos at the two integrated resorts even though they have stopped providing the shuttle bus services?'

Only 18 per cent said 'No'.

One reason, as suggested by forum user sandstone1, could be that 'forbidden fruit tastes sweeter. More restrictions on local patronage, the more likely it will increase.'

There have been more than one million visits by Singapore resident to the two casinos since Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands opened earlier this year.

MBS offered a paid premium service at 12 pick-up points covering the Central Business and Orchard areas.

RWS provided free shuttle bus ervices at 19-pick-up points, most of which were in the heartlands and the CBD areas.
Comments from readers

'Sending free buses to the heartlands is like casting a fishing net - when hauled, the catch, among hundreds of flapping little kuning fish, are a few super-size garoupers. These one or two prized catch each time is well worth the cost of the free shuttles.' - Misnomer, who disapproves of the free shuttle services.

'This question has not been answered: Why did CRA or the Government take three months to take notice and order the IRs to stop the shuttle service?' - Thelegarm

'We are the only nation in this planet that rejects a free bus ride for the citizens because the government fear the citizens cannot think. It is very frustrating to have a government that micromanage and yet want Spore to stop complaining.' - Hanweiwei

'They are "breaching the rules" becos they're fighting for "market share". If there's only one casino in the country, this will not happen. Genting Malaysia doesn't provides free bus rides to their resort.' - Melvinchanko

'Casino losers will at least lose less. They will save transport cost if there is free shuttle service. So let us "cut loss" for the gamblers.' - Murali_Sharma

'Food and free drinks don't do much to entice people to the casinos. At most, you attract the greedy to go for the food and then leave without gambling. The addicted go there regardless of the perks, and the rich billionaire gamblers probably won't mind spending even $100 on food. Ultimately, it's how often gamblers could win in those casinos that attract people there.' - GhostRider666

This is a very good point. 1 casino is already bad enough. By having 2, the market of local gamblers would have to be targetted.
