78,000 tonnes of garbage collected from Three Gorges Dam
Beijing, Dec 11, (IANS):

Sanitation workers have collected 78,000 tonnes of garbage from China's Three Gorges Dam, the hydro-power project on the Yangtze river in the country's southeast.

More than 68,000 workers and 21,000 boats were used to collect the garbage, Xinhua reported.

The surface area of the water in the dam has increased after the water-level was raised to its maximum level of 175 meters in October. It also increased garbage collectors' workload, with about 60 percent more garbage appearing. The cleanup operation helped ensure the water quality of the dam and its navigability.

The water-level was raiesed so it can carry out its full flood-control, power-generation, navigational and water-supply roles, said Wang Yuankai, Chongqing municipal work administrator.

Actually it makes sense. There was record rainfalls and large parts of the country up river was heavily flooded.

As you know when there is flood, everything gets washed down river. With a dam, everything gets trapped by the dam. Without the dam, the trashed would have flowed into the sea. So in a way it is good that the junk does get dumped into the ocean

Longbow..this is a hydro electric dam. The garbage can choke up the turbines / damage turbine blades and create serious damage to the system.

3 Gorges Dam: rubbish for fishing
Ganges Dam: bone for fishing
Singapore River Dam: fine for fishing

:D

I know. But all hydroelectric dams face the same issues. They have to contend with whatever the river brings. Even if there is no one living up river, a bad flood will bring down fallen trees, branches, vegetation, dead animals, silt and even large boulders

My point is that when you build a hydro dam, you have to contend with cleaning up the rubbish that the river brings. In this case, we are seeing timely maintenance done.

This is also why whosoevers controls the source of the river controls the river. They get to use the water and the garbages gets passed downstream!

78,000 tonnes of garbage from 300 millions people upstream ? From how long a period ? Since day one or just a day's accumulations ?

They can be carted away in 4000 x 20 tonnes dumptrucks and recycle into something else worthy i.e landfills, or maybe send to Singapore via mega barges since sand is unavailable here and Singapore needs to expand, pronto.
