SINGAPORE: Singapore reported 753 new COVID-19 cases as of noon on Saturday (May 9), taking the country's total to 22,460. Of the new cases, the vast majority are work permit holders residing in foreign worker dormitories, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) in its daily updateNine cases are Singaporeans or permanent residents.

I suspect something wrong with the test kits or testing methodology. But good luck finding out the truth.

I am beginning to wonder if there is a possibility that there are more than one strain of coronavirus and that the current test kit is not able to distinguish the different strains.

My hypothesis is that the virus that first originated from Wuhan, China is the most lethal strain and kills more people than the seasonal flu virus. As the virus spreads to the rest of the world, the Wuhan's virus has mutated and gets less and less lethal in its spread although its contagion is not diminished. So, that accounts for high infection cases but low death tolls in some countries. Singapore is one such country that I suspect has the less lethal strain of the coronavirus. Although Singapore reported 22K+ infection cases, the death toll is less than 100.

If it is true that the coronavirus has mutated to a less lethal strain, then there is nothing to worry about. People infected with the coronavirus will not get sick , perhaps only having a dry cough for a few days and recover soon after. Life can still go on.

The term "discharged" refers to those who were admitted to hospital. Most of those who are positive are in isolation somewhere and they are just waiting things out till they test negative.

A petition on the change.org platform calling for a Commission of Inquiry into the Covid-19 spread in Singapore’s migrant worker community has so far garnered more than 2,200 signatures.

The petition was started on May 1 by a man named Joshua Chow. He wrote: “By as early as February 2020, reports of cramped and unsanitary conditions in migrant workers’ dormitories had begun to flow over social media, and several migrant workers’ groups were sounding the alarm. People were concerned that the conditions in the dormitories would provide a hotbed for the rapid and massive spread of Covid-19 should no mitigatory action be taken.”

He added that the vast majority of confirmed Covid-19 cases were migrant workers residing in dormitories. “Of the 20,198 confirmed cases, 18,365 were migrant workers. That’s 90.92%*.”
