SINGAPORE: A 53-year-old man was sentenced to seven weeks' jail for cheating two foreigners of their money in a rental scam.
Ong Kok Beng faced three charges of cheating but the prosecution proceeded on two of them.
He was convicted on Thursday of cheating a 28-year-old Myanmar national, Kyaw Soe Aung, on 28 September 2011 of S$5,100.
Mr Kyaw had paid the money as rental deposit and advance payment for Ong's flat in Ang Mo Kio.
About a week later, on 5 October, Ong duped 26-year-old Magtibay Elizabeth Cornejo into thinking she would be able to rent his flat.
The Filipino sales executive paid S$1,600 as deposit.
The two victims found out soon after that the flat was not for rent and made police reports.
For dishonestly inducing delivery of a property, Ong could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined.
