Security officials in Pakistan say India has fired missiles across the border in three locations tonight (Tuesday, May 6) following rising tensions between the Asian neighbours.

India has launched Operation Sindoor following an attack by militants that saw 26 civilians killed in the resort town of Pahalgam on April 22, marking the deadliest militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir since 2019.

India has blamed Pakistan for the attack, a charge Islamabad strongly rejects.

India fired missiles across the border into Pakistani-controlled territory in at least three locations early on Wednesday, killing a child and wounding two other people, security officials said.

India said it was striking infrastructure used by militants.

Flight24, which monitors flights across the world, reports flights in Pakistani airspace are being diverted, with flights at the country's airports also not taking off as scheduled.

The Pakistani army spokesman, Lt Gen Ahmad Sharif, told ARY News that the missiles were launched from within Indian territory and that no Indian aircraft had entered Pakistani airspace.

“This was a cowardly attack targeting innocent civilians under the cover of darkness,” Mr Sharif told the broadcaster.

India’s Defence Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (local time) that at least nine sites were targeted “where terrorist attacks against India have been planned”.

“Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistan military facilities have been targeted,” the statement said, adding that “India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution”.

The latest flare-up led the two nuclear-armed rivals to expel each other’s diplomats and nationals, as well as the closing of airspace.

India has also suspended a critical water-sharing treaty with Pakistan.
