The Ministry of Health and the National Environment Agency
(NEA) have announced today (13 Aug) in a joint statement that a 6th person has
died of dengue fever.

It is the 5th dengue death confirmed to have originated in Singapore this
year, with one case likely originating in Indonesia.

The deceased is a 52-year-old Chinese male who lived at Corporation Walk.

The patient was first seen at Jurong Polyclinic on 29 June 2013 with a 2-day
history of fever. He returned to the polyclinic on 4 July 2013 as he was still
having fever. He was referred by the Polyclinic to the National University
Hospital Emergency Department and was admitted to the Medical Intensive Care
Unit on the same day.

He was later diagnosed with Dengue Shock Syndrome. The patient’s condition
improved transiently after dialysis and supportive therapy but he remained
critically ill with low blood count. The patient’s condition deteriorated after
he developed pneumonia with septic shock on 11 August. He passed away today.

According to NEA, “The patient’s residence was in a dengue cluster of 3 cases
which closed on 17 July 2013 and 2 breeding habitats were found in July, one in
a vase and another in a flower pot.”

NEA said its inspectors will continue with checks in the area and residents
are encouraged to cooperate fully. They should also remain vigilant and clear
any stagnant water in their homes and the vicinity.

The statement said, “We are still in the midst of dengue season in Singapore.
With our low population herd immunity, we would like to urge everyone to
continue remaining vigilant to take appropriate precautions to prevent mosquito
breeding by doing the Mozzie Wipeout weekly, so as to help sustain the current
downward trend in mosquito breeding spots.”

As at 3pm today (13 Aug), 14,363 cases of dengue have already been reported
since the beginning of this year. At present, there are 42 active dengue
clusters in Singapore [Link].

On 25 June, there were 11,217 cases. In 49 days since 25 June, there has been
an increase of 3,146 cases.

The 6 spirits should haunt Vivan and family to exact some justice in this abject failure of the NEA.
