A 69-year-old man in Singapore was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment for raping his step-granddaughter and sexually assaulting her multiple times when she was between nine- and ten-years-old.

According to CNA, the man pleaded guilty in court on Nov. 3 to one charge of raping a minor and another of sexual assault by penetration of a minor.

Another 12 charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.

The names of the offender and the victim cannot be revealed as there is a gag order protecting the victim's identity.

Slept in the same room as her grandparents

According to court documents seen by Mothership, the victim has stayed with her grandmother since she was born.

She had never met her mother and her father was in jail since 2010, leaving her in her grandmother's care.

The offender and the victim's grandmother were previously married in 1996, but had divorced four years later in 2000.

In 2008, the offender remarried the victim's grandmother and moved into the unit with the victim and her grandmother.

The three of them slept in the same room, with the victim sleeping on a mattress on the floor while her grandparents shared the bed.

Assaulted her on at least nine occasions

The offender sexually assaulted the victim on at least nine occasions from 2016 to 2017, when she was between nine- to 10-years-old.

Sometime between March 2016 and October 2016, the victim's grandparents had invited several friends over to their house to drink alcohol.

Their friends, along with the victim's grandmother, went out sometime after midnight, leaving the offender alone in the unit with the victim.

He subsequently molested the victim in the bedroom and forced her to perform a sex act on him, which made her "disgusted".

Sometime between January 2017 and June 2017, the offender once again invited his friends over to the house for alcohol.

When they left, he proceeded to rape the victim, and the victim started to cry as she was in pain.

In December 2019, the offender moved out of the unit after him and the victim's grandmother divorced.

His offences only came to light in July 2020, when the victim was referred to her school counsellor for cutting herself.

It was then when she revealed to the counsellor that she had been sexually abused by the offender since she was nine, and added he had raped her when she was just nine.

The school later reported the matter to Child Protective Service, which informed the victim's grandmother about the allegations.

The victim subsequently made a police report, stating that she had been raped.

Psychological impact on the victim

According to the victim's psychiatric report, she constantly thought about the sexual acts she was forced to engage in and had flashbacks about them.

She also told her doctor that she had passive suicidal wishes, and had been engaging in self-harm since she was in Primary Five.

She would cut herself when she felt stressed about what the accused did to her, and when she worried about her grandmother's well-being.

According to a clinical psychologist who assessed her, the victim presented with trauma symptoms that met the clinical criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder, which was in relation to the cumulative impact of all her trauma experiences, in particular the sexual abuse by the offender.

According to the psychologist, the victim also presented with some symptoms of depression, though her symptoms did not meet the clinical criteria for mood disorders.

The victim also reported having a history of self-harm and suicidal thoughts and behaviour, which were triggered by being removed from her grandmother's care after the sexual abuse was disclosed, her thoughts of self-blame and not being “good enough” for her family.

The prosecution sought 18 to 20 years' jail for the offender, with no extra jail in lieu of caning.

As the offender was above 50-years-old, he could not be caned.

According to CNA, when asked about the latter, she said that the sought sentence was "adequate" to reflect the gravity of the offences.

In his appeal, the offender said that he "[regretted]" what he had done.

"What's done has been done already," he said.

He also asked for forgiveness, saying that he was a first-time offender.

The offender added that he had his own family in Malaysia, with two daughters from his first marriage, and said that he would like to grow old with them.
