65-year-old arrested for allegedly vandalising HDB blocks

SINGAPORE: Police said on Thursday (Aug 14) they have arrested a 65-year-old man for allegedly vandalising the walls of several blocks of flats in Teck Whye.
The police said in a statement that they received reports on Tuesday at 6.42am of HDB blocks defaced with marker ink. Officers responding to the scene discovered that walls and pillars at the void deck of several blocks were defaced.
The police said that officers from the Jurong Police Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and retrieved CCTV footage in the vicinity. They managed to establish the culprit’s identity and the man was arrested on the same day at about 6.38pm, along Teck Whye Lane.
Preliminary investigations revealed the suspect had committed at least 19 similar cases on the same day at various HDB blocks in the Teck Whye area, police said.
Under the Vandalism Act, offenders face a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to S$2,000 as well as between three and eight strokes of the cane, although the cane is reserved for men under the age of 50 in Singapore. - CNA/cy
