SINGAPORE - The police arrested a 61-year-old man who is believed to be involved in loansharking activities.

On Dec 3, two members of public reported to the police that their residences located at Cashew Road and Gangsa Road had been harassed by loanshark syndicates.

Officers from the Jurong Police Division established the identity of the suspect using images captured by the police cameras and arrested him in the vicinity of York Hill on Dec 11.

Two mobile phones and one Polo T-shirt were also seized in relation to the case.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the 61-year-old suspect is believed to have assisted the loanshark syndicates in carrying out loansharking harassment at Bukit Panjang, Jurong West and Sembawang public housing estates by splashing paint at the main doors of debtors' residences and defacing walls with loanshark graffiti.

First time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment will face a jail term of up to 5 years, a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, and between 3 and 6 strokes of caning.
