An Investor attitude survey by Friends Provident International (FPI) found that most (61%) Singaporeans who have lived overseas don’t want to retire in Singapore.
The survey took responses from over 1000 people from both Hong Kong and Singapore who have lived or worked in another country for at least 6 months before.
When asked about where the respondents would want to retire, only 39% said they’d want to retire in their home countries. 37% said that they would want to retire in the countries that they lived in abroad. Another 13% said they’d want to retire in some other country and 12% were undecided.
The main reasons that respondents gave for wanting to retire elsewhere were to chase a better quality of life or lower cost of living.
Popular retirement options for Singaporeans were Australia and Malaysia. For Hong Kongers, many said they’d want to retire in Singapore.

The survey also found that in general, people who have lived abroad before have wider views on investment and are more likely to invest abroad in things like property, bonds, currency and shares.
FPI explained that working abroad can expose investors to more opportunities and encourages them to think outside of their local market.
