6 cheating lawyers to be named!

SINGAPORE - High Court judge Choo Han Teck on Wednesday (April 27) reversed his decision to redact the names of six trainee lawyers who had cheated in the 2020 Bar examination.

This followed an application by the Attorney-General for the judge to rescind his earlier order to redact the names of the six law graduates.

"Initially, I believed that redacting the names of the applicants would let them go about the process of recovery quietly and uneventfully, but I am now of the view that it is better to face the publicity than to hide from it," said Justice Choo.

The six are: Monisha Devaraj, Kushal Atul Shah, Sreeraam Ravenderan, Lynn Kuek Yi Ting, Matthew Chow Jun Feng, and Lionel Wong Choong Yoong.

Last Monday, Justice Choo had adjourned the applications by the six to be called to the Bar, after the Attorney-General objected to their admission.

Five of them had their applications adjourned for six months, while the other had hers adjourned for a year.

In the spirit of "second chances", Justice Choo had directed that the six not be named in the hope that they will not face prejudice in the long run.

However, it created unhappiness among some who believe that the trainees got off lightly.

On Wednesday, Justice Choo said: "The tremendous public interest in the applicants' identities seems to have been borne by a mix of curiosity, indignation, as well as sympathy.

"But strong sentiments may sometimes interfere with the proper understanding of the idea of second chances. We know that there are different kinds of people where second chances are concerned - those who believe in them, and those who don't.

"And there are those who need them, and those who give them. And in between, there is a vast stretch in which we can debate to no end as to who is deserving and who is not."

As expected all of them are either Chinese or Ah Nehs. Not a single Ang Moh among them.

This proves that Ang Mohs are far more honest.

I disagree. It depends on who their fathers are. If your father is a big-time property developer, the big law firms will grab you. Just imagine the amount of businesses you will bring in. It's not about your legal skills; it's all about business.

If they are in school straight away expel lah. How can lawyers to be cheat on subjects like ethics?

I'm surprised they were allowed to sit for the examinations again. If it's not a crime to cheat in an examination, and the Court has no power to pass any sentence, then the matter should not have been referred to the Court in the first place.

The examining body should have made the decision whether or not to allow them to re-sit for the examinations or at least ban them for 3 year before they are allowed to sit for the examinations again. Instead, the examining body pretended like nothing happened.

those not disclosed are well connected. not these 6.9 who may be foreigners on sponsorship or scholarship. miss kuek is the most recalcitrant, wants to fight the case but has to retake the entire course while others only have to retake the exams.

That's the problem of civil servants. They sometimes don't know how to settle issue amicably and in a low lower profile ways.

Now of course they had been exposed to public knowledge. Judge must say something and of course the court of public judgment is there too. Everyone likes to stand on morally high ground pretending they are Saint and untainted.

You pay these civil servant to solve issue and not to create more issues. Who is heading the examination board must be banished and given warning for total Incompetency.

You are right if cheating is not a crime. The court should not have any dealing in it. The examination board should take over the issues and solve it on hand.

Seems strange that some third party outside the law school to be conducting the exams.
Has this always been so, or this is yet another case where everyone is outsourcing everything
that can be outsourced?

They retook the exams again and passed. As to why the matter was before the court, it's because they were being formally admitted to the bar as new lawyers. All new lawyers have to be admitted before a High Court judge. That's when AGC objected to their applications.

That is my point. Why did the examining body let them re-sit the examinations ? If you get caught at GCE 'O' Level for cheating, would MOE or your school allow you to re-sit for examinations immediately as if nothing happened ? It's because the examining body did not make its public stance on the issue, and they song song apply for admission to the Bar. Imagine if the AGC didn't take any actions, their cheating actions could well have been covered up for good.

Question remains - why is there no update for the remaining ones?
Unamed, they remain to help tarnish the rest of the cohort.
No one in authority can explain?

These bastards should be expelled from the bar with no further tolerance to be shown. They are supposed to be rightful justice holders but yet they cheated. What kind of integrity do they possess? Their next course of work should be Grab Delivery.

Not only do they tarnish the rest of the cohort, the integrity of the entire legal profession has already been tarnished.
