The death toll has risen to 54 as of Monday morning after the worst flooding in decades ravaged Fushun City, northeast China's Liaoning Province, said local authorities on Monday.

Extreme rainstorms battered Liaoning from Thursday to Saturday, leaving many rivers flooded in Fushun, said the Liaoning provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.

The downpours drenched rural houses, cut off railway and road traffic and power supply in the city.

Northeast Chinese provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang are major grain producers in the country.
