Dear TRE,
I just read on the net that Minister Khaw Boon Wan estimated thatthe annual operating cost for the Gardens by the Bay comes at a hefty
price of $53 million (‘Final
cost for Gardens by the Bay within budget: Khaw‘). I have also come across
another piece of news wherea 31-year-old man has been charged
with stealing five tins of baby milk powder worth about S$300. What’s ironical
is that, $1B of the taxpayers’ money was spent on maintaining this huge white
elephant, and nothing was allocated to the needy who funded this government and
build this country with their sweat and blood!
What economy value can we derived from the gardens, at $53m a year? In order
to break even, you would need 2.65 million visitors EACH YEAR paying $20 just to
visit the Gardens by the Bay. Do you know that Taiwan has a similar conservatory
named the “Tropical Rainforest Conservatory at the National Museum of Natural
Science”. They only charge the Taiwanese NT$20 per adult. That is $1 Singapore
dollars. Have you wondered why Gardens by the Bay still cost so much considering
the fact that these wonderful people “put” in lots of their effort in
maintaining “sustainability”?
Below is the website of National Museum of Natural Science of Taiwan:
Does the government know how much $53 million can be used to feed many of our
low income family for a year? And they rather spent it on something that can
neither fill anyone’s stomach nor improve the state of Singaporeans’ health. How
about spending the money to make healthcare more affordable or free pre-school
education for our low income family? The incumbent simply refused to fork a few
extra dollars a day for our elderly folks but splurged millions on useless
events like Youth Olympics, and billions to subside private transport operators
who makes money through public transports and now MORE millions are wasted on a
garden!
Ok, if that’s the case, will the relevant authorities give a complete
breakdown on how the cost of maintaining that park would cost $53 million a
year. Trust is a bygone word for these people and trusting them to manage even a
small task can be quite a frightening experience for us Singaporeans, after
listening to some warped nonsense, twisted logic and rubbish excuses for so many
years.
Please give us a reasonable breakdown of the cost and some accountability,
thank you very much.
