HONG KONG (AFP) - A 1,000-year-old bowl from China’s Song Dynasty sold for US$37.7 million (S$51.5 million) in Hong Kong on Tuesday (Oct 3), breaking the record for Chinese ceramics, auction house Sotheby’s said.

The small piece – which dates from 960-1127 – stole the previous record of US$36.05 million set in 2014 for a Ming Dynasty wine cup which was snapped up by a Shanghai tycoon famous for making eye-watering bids.

The person behind Tuesday’s winning offer wished to remain anonymous, Sotheby’s said, with the auction house declining to say whether the buyer hailed from the Chinese mainland or not.

Goodness! With the kind of money, I can buy 1000 times 1000 bowls and still have money left.

if no tiny chip on the edge will fetch at least $69m.

who can be sure this bowl is a genuine piece? i am more interested in art pieces than in antiques.

if those who are interested in art investment, go for the sinkie generation pioneer artists' work.

they are worth money and still growing in terms of value.

its just insanity lah
but not for the collector
maybe its an investment
he can resell it for $100 million later

If that bowl a deeper shade, I would have told my man to go all the way.

Wasted... you just needed to put it in a darker room to admire it in a darker shade... a piece of beauty, you know?
