SINGAPORE : Singapore may see a fourth telco offering mobile services here soon.
The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore will auction off in November Singapore's final third-generation (3G) mobile spectrum, despite opposition from the existing three telcos since the idea was first mooted in March this year.
IDA said it welcomes bids from new and existing operators - and these could come to at least S$20 million.
Analysts believe a new operator may emerge - and it could be either one of the new broadband providers - SuperInternet or LGA Telecom.
Ng Kian Teck, an analyst with SIAS Research, said: "We believe that if a fourth operator was to come in, this fourth operator will likely be one of the broadband operators. And it will bundle these broadband operations with the mobile operations to form a bundling package for consumers."
Industry experts say the entrance of a fourth mobile operator will have the most impact on MobileOne (M1).
This is because the new operator will compete to offer low, competitive pricing packages to attract customers.
Still, customers will stand to benefit the most, from likely cheaper mobile plans.
Mr Ng said: "Pricing-wise, it will probably be in the lower-end tier because they are new entrants and they need low pricing to attract new customers."
