Police arrested 46 people who were suspected of being involved in loansharking activities in an islandwide operation that ended in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The 32 men and 14 women, aged between 18 and 65 years old, were arrested during raids in Bedok, Woodlands, Toa Payoh, Clementi, Geylang Bahru, Hougang and Tampines.
Early investigations found that they had helped loansharks open bank accounts and had also given away their bank cards and personal identification numbers to loanshark syndicates that used them for illegal money transfers.
Several bank transaction receipts were recovered during the operation that lasted 19 hours.
Among those arrested is a 22-year-old who is also suspected of harassment. He is alleged to have scrawled graffiti on the walls of a debtor's unit.
