I knew about guilds from playing fantasy games from dungeons and dragons for example where there's the infamous thieves guild. If you play fantasy games or know about them you would know what a thief's guild is. That's how i got to know about this type of association called a "guild"

The fact of the matter is a guild is just a word used to group ppl of the same profession/hobby/interests together. No difference from say a club for example.
