4 people issued with Detention Orders for involvement in match-fixing

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has confirmed that Detention Orders have been issued on four persons for being part of a global football match-fixing syndicate.
MHA said a fifth person has been issued a Police Supervision Order.
The orders were issued under the Criminal Law Temporary Provisions Act (CLTPA), which is due for a review in Oct 2014.
The Singapore Police Force and the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) started investigations into this match-fixing syndicate since 2011.
In March this year, a team of officers from the Singapore Police Force and CPIB went to the INTERPOL Headquarters in Lyon, France to assist in match-fixing investigations with INTERPOL and the European authorities.
The Police and CPIB conducted a joint operation to arrest 14 suspects on September 17 this year for their involvement in global football match-fixing.
Nine were released on police bail, while another five were detained for investigations under the CLTPA.
MHA said the Orders will be referred to a Criminal Law Advisory Committee (CLAC) within the next 28 days.
The CLAC is an independent committee comprising former judges and experienced lawyers in private practice.
The persons issued with the Orders will be informed of the grounds of detention.
They will appear before the Advisory Committee and may be legally represented at the Hearing.
The Advisory Committee will then submit to the President a written report on the making of the Orders and its recommendations.
The President will consider the report and may, acting on the advice of Cabinet, cancel, confirm or vary the Order.
In response to media queries, MHA said it is unable to release the names of the five persons as the process has not yet been completed. - CNA/fa
