Malaysians are not foreigners.
Even before merdeka under British rule,, malayans and have been making inroads to Singapore to search for better opportunities.
P Ramlee is a very good example. He took a train ride from penang to singapore just to be in show biz. Malays go to Clifford pier to work as deck hand on ships.
Students like Dr m and thousands others from the kampung got their degree from universities and colleges in Singapore.
The two parallel keretapi tanah melayu tracks running down the peninsula ends at tanjung pagar port where the good are traded and exported.

Actually loads of Malays commute to work in Singapore everyday on their motorbikes. But they don't sail on ships anymore as those have been taken over by Indonesians, Myanmar and on European vessels, philippinos.
Can't really blame them as Dr m abused affirmative action in order to garner malay rural voters and limiting non malays opportunities. Those with excellent scores were denied entry into gahmen universities. To mitigate this, private owned universities were allowed to operate but it came 20 years too late and resentment from the generations in the 1970-1980's can be felt till today.
