SINGAPORE - Police arrested four people for operating and gaming in an illegal gambling den at a shop house on March 14.

Officers from Bedok Police Division raided a shop house unit located along Geylang Road at 6am on March 14. Four men aged between 33 and 56 were arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the suspects aged 33 had rented the shop house for the purpose of gambling while the remaining suspects were believed to be patrons.

Eighteen modified computers and cash amounting to about $620 were also seized as case exhibits.

The 33-year-old suspect and two other suspects will be charged in court on March 18. Investigation against the remaining 49-year-old suspect is on-going.

Any person convicted of an offence of managing a place to be used as a common gaming house under shall be fined an amount not less than S$5,000 and not more than S$50,000 and shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years.

As for the players, any person convicted of an offence of gaming in a common gaming house under Section 7 of the Common Gaming Houses Act, shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding S$5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both.

Commander of Bedok Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police How Kwang Hwee, said: "Police take a serious view on illegal gambling activities and will continue to conduct strict enforcement against such activities. Owners have a responsibility to ensure that their premises are not used for illegal activities."
