SINGAPORE - What was supposed to be a peaceful night on Tuesday descended into chaos when eight people from two neighbouring households got into a scuffle over a chair along the common corridor.
According to a Shinmin Daily report, 37-year-old Ho Mei Ying, who runs an economical rice stall in a market nearby, placed a plastic chair she had washed out on the corridor to dry after her 3-year-old daughter had urinated on it.
Upon seeing this, her neighbour, 44-year-old Mrs Tan who runs a kway chap stall, came out and made a big fuss.
She then sprayed insecticide onto Madam Ho's windows, swept dust into her home and kicked over the chair.
When Madam Ho asked Mrs Tan why she kicked over the chair, Mrs Tan scolded her and rushed over to Madam Ho despite her eldest daughter trying to stop her by holding onto her waist with both arms.
"I picked up the chair to block off any attacks but Mrs Tan grabbed hold of the chair as well and refused to let go," Madam Ho recounted.
This flashpoint got members from both families rushing out and led to a huge fight between the parties involved.
In the ensuing fight, Madam Ho and her husband got pushed to the ground, with the latter apparently receiving a few blows from Mrs Tan's husband.
He then shouted for a neighbour to call the police.
When the authorities arrived at the scene, Madam Ho's husband was bleeding from the eyes and had bruises on his kneecap while Madam Ho experienced pain in her left knee and right shoulder and had bruises on her forearm.
The two were taken to a hospital in an ambulance. The police subsequently arrested four people - believed to be Mrs Ho, her husband and their two daughters aged 18 and 17.
