SINGAPORE Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan said today that former Prime Ministers Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Goh Chok Tong has accepted his offer of $30,000 to annul his bankruptcy.

Upon receiving the money, the creditors would formally vote on the offer, and if they accepted, the OA would annul the bankruptcy.

Dr Chee made the offer to settle his case on 27 July and the Official Assignee replied to him today saying that his creditors have accepted the offer.

If he is able to raise the stated $30,000 and the creditors vote to accept the money, the long-running case, which first started in 2001, will finally be closed.

Dr Chee, the party’s secretary-general, was declared a bankrupt in 2006 for failing to pay $500,000 in damages to then Senior Minister Goh and then Minister Mentor Lee for defaming them during the 2001 General Election campaign.

He had accused them of misleading Parliament over a $17 billion loan to Indonesia in 1998.

He was referring to a rescue package Singapore had offered Indonesia during the Asian Financial Crisis, made up of a US$5 billion standby loan and the buying of the rupiah in foreign exchange markets to support the Indonesian currency.

But Singapore did not lend the money to Indonesia in the end.

Dr Chee said that he is looking to raise the money as soon as possible in order to be able to stand in the next General Election in 2016.

Why $30 000.
The reputation of those two foggies were already in tatters after election 2011.

LOL...Almost like Chee playing "Deal or no Deal" with them.

Their reputation is worth next to shit now.

At least one unanswered question emerges from this.

This bankruptcy was the result of the 2001 suit.

But what of the 2006 suit, brought by LHL and GCT? It seems that radio-silence is being maintained on that.

What a heavy price to pay for speaking up and making a mistake.

Doesnt argur well for the nation.

I am sure this one reason weighed within PAP's calculations in deciding to accept Chee's offer.

Chee will be 55 by the election in 2016. All PAP needs to do is to prevent him from winning any seat in 2016, not that difficult to be honest because SDP didn't manage to cross 40% anywhere despite closing the gap significantly. By 2022, PAP would be more relaxed because even if Chee wins, he will be 60 and 65 by the time he finishes one parliament term. Older than JBJ, Chiam and Low who won at the age of 55, 50 and 35.

Even get voted in if opposition dun get the number of MPs needed also lppl.
And if he get elected there are more chances to fix him even...we have seen JBJ's example.
If those fucktards dun wake up, Dr Chee can't do much even if he is elected.

At the same time, Chee is but one man. There are others like his cohort Vincent and Nicole Seah, apart from the WP MPs, who are already more effective than him. Opposition and their supporters shouldn't oversell one man.

yes, but so far ltk and throughout his terms, cst never got fixed. the mean would say they are spineless compared to jbj or chee. but are they spineless or smarter, or more popular that's why pap dare not touch them?

Old Man hated the style, guts, gumption, audacity of JBJ and CSJ. Nothing to do with popularity.

People who are outright confrontational seem to offend his ego. It's like only he himself is entitled to act like that - whether to the pre-1959 govts, the Brits, UMNO and whoever he chose to take on.

Anybody who shows he has balls, he wants to castrate them.

It would be quite good case studies to exam some of the nature and content of the lawsuits against JBJ and CSJ.

For JBJ:
- For alleging LKY's blackhand in Teh Cheang Wan case.
- For article in Hammer (not by him) on Tamil Language Week leaders.
- For announcing of the making of police report by TLH.

For CSJ:
- For "lending" money to Suharto.
- For comparing PAP to NKF.

As you can see, the nature of the statements have a pattern. JBJ tends to go for allegations of blackhand politics, conspiracies and dark relations. For Chee, it seems that he targets sticking the label, misuse of money, on PAP leaders.

JBJ however had one criminal charge: improper WP accounts record. CSJ criminal charges were contempt of Parliament on healthcare figures, contempt of court by alleging bias and several illegal protests.

As it stands, JBJ was clearly more victimised that CSJ.
