3 years' jail for credit card cheat

Using stolen credit cards, a jobless man bought gold jewellery of between $4,000 and $5,000 per piece - chalking up nearly $20,000 within a week in June this year.

On Sept 30, a district court jailed Lam Meng Teck for three years. The 41-year-old went on a cheating spree last year while on bail for allowing his bank accounts and ATM cards to be used by a loan shark for debt collection. In return, Lam was paid $50 each time. For this offence, he was sentenced to a $300,000 fine and a further two months in jail.

District Judge Eddy Tham said it was 'reprehensible' for Lam to abuse the freedom he had been given to commit other crimes.

In June this year, Lam was recruited by an accomplice known only as Ah Boy to buy gold jewellery with other people's credit cards. For his role, Lam would receive 25 per cent of the purchase price.
