28 barred from registering as housing agents

By Joanne Chan | Posted: 29 August 2012 1252 hrs

SINGAPORE: As of August (2012), 28 people have been barred from registering as housing agents, says the Council for Estate Agencies (CEA).

Revealing this figure in its inaugural e-newsletter CEAnergy, the council says half of those debarred had earlier convictions and were stopped from registering with CEA.

The others were existing agents whose licences were up for renewal, but were struck off due to convictions for various offences.

CEA says one case involved an agent who applied for a licence renewal, but was rejected as he had been convicted for illegal moneylending.

Under the Estate Agents Act, a housing agent cannot be a moneylender, nor can he carry any convictions.

CEA ensures that unregistered agents do not work.

To date, it has prosecuted three unregistered agents.

It says that more people will be charged in the coming months.
