27 arrested for loanshark activities

By Vanessa Jalleh

TWENTY-TWO men and five women were arrested after an islandwide crackdown on loanshark activities. Operations, which started on Monday, ended early Tuesday morning. Police raids took place in Hougang, Tampines, Bedok, Choa Chu Kang, Kim Tian, Jalan Bukit Merah, Jurong West, Woodlands and at Ho Ching Road. Investigations revealed that 24 suspects had allegedly opened bank accounts and gave their Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards to loanshark syndicates. Two of the remaining suspects are believed to have collected the ATM cards from the other suspects while the last allegedly carried out bank transfers on behalf of loansharks. Investigations are still ongoing.

They deserved to be arrested for their stupidity. Opening bank accounts and handing over ATM cards to facilitate the ah long operations is old-style.
