中国运-20重型军用运输机总设计师唐长红近日在接受央视《东方时空》栏目采访时表示，运-20已正式批量生产。他还表示，“飞机交付部队以后完成了很多新的试验，像运载、空投、空降等”。在中国航空工业集团发布的《长风破浪》宣传片中，运-20生产线首次曝光。
此前，唐长红已透露运-20今年将换装中国国产发动机。若运-20换装国产发动机，其产能将不受发动机的制约，将快速进入批量生产阶段。
运-20运输机（Y-20），代号鲲鹏，是由中国西安飞机工业集团研发的重型军用运输机，为目前中国新一代重型多用途大型运输机。运-20运输机2013年1月首飞，2016年6月首批交付空军。
长期以来，快速远程投送能力一直是中国军方的软肋，运-20或将从根本上改变这一局面，它对中国军方的意义一点不比歼-20小。
运-20最大起飞重量为220吨，可在复杂气象条件下，执行各种物资和人员的长距离航空运输任务。运-20最大载重能力达到66吨，可以载运主战坦克等重装备，最大飞行距离亦增至7800公里。另外，运-20的电子设备相较伊尔-76也有了较大改进。
除了执行投送人员装备任务外，运-20也是研发大型预警机、加油机、电子侦察机的平台。一旦解决发动机国产化这一难题，中国军用大飞机的研发和生产将不再受制于人。可以说，运-20的批量生产将真正使中国跨入攻防兼备的战略空军门槛。
据悉，我国目前已解决了影响运-20生产的关键性问题。之前，我国该型号的运输机发动机一直依靠进口乌克兰的D-30航空发动机。而由于其他型号的战机也在使用D-30，从而在可使用发动机数量上限制了运-20的生产。
不过，运-20将使用哪一款国产发动机目前还不得而知。有消息说，运-20可能使用推力更大的涡扇-20发动机。涡扇-20发动机是中国在太行发动机基础上，自行研制的大涵道比涡扇发动机。该型发动机一旦列装，标志着中国航空工业将克服发动机的制约，进入发展的快车道。
长期以来，航空发动机都是中国军机发展的软肋。近几年来，中国国产航空发动机研发进展很快，虽与美国、俄罗斯相比仍有较大差距，但每年都有新的突破。
