KUALA LUMPUR - Two friends were murdered in an oil palm plantation in Gedangsa, Hulu Selangor, on Saturday.

In the incident at Kampung Sri Keledang, one of the victims had his throat slit while the other had his head crushed.

Hulu Selangor police chief Superintendent Norel Azmi Yahaya Affandi said the victims were identified as Muhammad Hafiz Omar, 29, and Hamsi Hashim, 42.

He said police were notified of the incident at 5pm by Hafiz's elder brother, who made the gruesome discovery when he went to the plantation-cum-duck farm to visit the victim.

The plantation belongs to Hafiz's family. Both of the murdered men had been working there as farm hands for over a year and lived in a shed there.

Hamsi's body was found on a riverbank. A bloodstained rake was found by the body.

Hafiz's body was later found in the shed with the throat slit. A small knife with bloodstains was found in between his legs.

"There were blood spatters on the shed's walls and floor, and we believe the assailants had ransacked it," Norel said.

They were last seen alive at midnight on Friday.

Police believe that several assailants had gone to the location where they scuffled with Hamsi on the riverbank. The rake was used to attack him.

The killers are believed to have gone into the shed, where Hafiz was sleeping, before killing him.

Hafiz's father Omar Puteh, 68, said his eldest son had gone to check at 3pm after an angler came to their house, 4km from the farm, to return Hafiz's pouchbag.

The pouchbag, containing the victim's wallet, identity card, cellular phone and motorcycle key, was found floating in Sungai Slim.

"When my eldest son went there, he saw Hamsi's body and returned home immediately. We then went to the Gedangsa police station.

"We returned to the location together with the police, before finding Hafiz lying in a pool of blood in the shed," he said when met at the Sungai Buloh Hospital mortuary yesterday.

Hafiz was the ninth of 12 children.

Hamsi was a divorcee with two sons, aged 8 and 23. His youngest, Shahrizal, turns 8 this Saturday.

As his birthday falls in the fasting month this year, he was supposed to have an early celebration on the day of the incident.

Hamsi's ex-wife, Rohani Nazir, 41, said the boy had invited his father for the birthday party at her house in Ladang Lima Belas, also in Gedangsa, but the victim said he could not make it.

The boy, who wanted his father to get a taste of his birthday cake, had called him several times on Thursday, but could not reach him.

The family then went to the plantation to check and was shocked to find policemen there.
