2 opposition parties may form alliance

SINGAPORE: An alliance between two opposition parties is in the works after representatives from each party jointly visited Sengkang residents on Sunday, for the first time.

Representatives of the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) and the chairman of the Socialist Front (SF) made their rounds in the estate on Sunday morning.

Speaking to reporters after the walkabout at Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, SF chairman Ng Teck Siong confirmed that both parties were discussing a coalition at the upcoming elections but added that nothing had been confirmed yet.

Mr Ng said the two parties were planning to "strike out some alliance" by April, predicted by SDA's secretary-general Desmond Lim to be when the General Election could be called.

Mr Lim said this was still a courting period to better understand each other and inviting SF for the walkabout was an opportunity for them to see how the SDA worked.

Joining Mr Lim and Mr Ng on a rainy Sunday morning were SDA's two party mascots and a representative dressed in a God of Fortune outfit that amused residents. This was SDA's third visit to the area.

Mr Lim had earlier said the SDA was concentrating its efforts in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC and reiterated his interest on Sunday.

Disagreements between Mr Lim and SDA chairman Chiam See Tong were reported late last year.

Mr Chiam had wanted to bring in the Reform Party but alliance leaders said they were not consulted on the matter.
Mr Ng did not seem too perturbed by the rift.

He said anyone who wanted to take on the ruling People's Action Party must work together towards that objective, adding that his party is still holding on to their socialism ideology to fight for equality and justice.

For the four-month-old SF, which is still recruiting members, Mr Ng added they had limited resources, and that collaboration would give people greater confidence in voting.

Mr Ng founded the party with lawyer Chia Ti Lik, who had contested in the 2006 General Election on the Workers' Party's ticket.

The SDA is looking to attract new immigrants and Mr Lim said they welcomed any opposition parties but they must abide by SDA's constitution, which included joining without any conditions.

Seventy-three-year-old resident Ong Chwee, who has been living in Sengkang for the past 12 years, said: "I am very pleased with all the amenities offered here but I just hope to have more interaction with the political leaders of this ward … till now I have not met any of them."
