it's been in discussion for past couple of years already. they have put forth measures such as having high railings, canopy etc.
question is, would it be enough? or they should just ban transporting of workers? much like the chewing gum ban?

Pap will not support the protection of these cheapo FTs because it is additional cost to businesses. They can boast 1st world facilities and living standards all they want, but everybody knows the labour standards in this country is very 3rd world.

Sometimes it seems to me the traffic police allows/condone speeding by speed limit vehicles.You see that all days that they are speeding freely on the center and outer lanes all the time.

Most likely the following causes, usually maintenance issues:
1. Worn out/malfunctioning brakes
2. Steering defect during braking
3. bald tires
4. Wheel alignment that can lead to unbalanced steering control
All the above can cause vehicle to pull to one side and lose control. esp with load at the back, can fishtail.
Owners are usually tight-fisted and negligent on vehicle maintenance & upkeep.

I think it's more to do with the driver as all vehicles have to go for annual inspection.
Early morning under the cover of darkness, I often see these lorries - probably driven by one of their fellow FT men - over-taking me. Nothing wrong except that I was driving at 90 KPH the maximum limit, and the lorry with loads of sleeping men, overtaking me on the left - and even sometime on my right. Don't blame anybody except the driver.

SINGAPORE: Recommendations on enhancing the safety of workers transported on lorries could be implemented before the end of the year.
Transport Minister Raymond Lim said that a Work Group has been set up to look into the issue, and a report is expected to be complete by year-end.
The Work Group is co-chaired by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Manpower Ministry, and includes representatives from the Singapore Contractors Association, the Singapore Transport Association and the Singapore School & Private Hire Bus Owners' Association.
Mr Lim disclosed this in response to a Parliamentary question from MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Christopher de Souza.
The MP had asked if minimum safety requirements such as proper seats and shelter from rain would be mandated for such a form of transportation.
Currently, in a move to help businesses reduce costs, owners and hirers of goods vehicles are allowed to use their vehicles to transport their workers to and from their places of work or business, subject to various safety regulations put in place by the LTA.
Among them, workers must be seated at a height of not more than 3.2 metres from the ground. A label must also be displayed to indicate the maximum number of workers that can be transported. If goods are also transported, the number of persons should be reduced accordingly.
Mr Lim said the label is a reminder on the maximum number of workers the vehicle can carry. It also facilitates enforcement against errant employers who overload their vehicles.

just reduce the speed limit back to 60kmph for these vehicles and stick them on the left lane. send out the frequently TPs to keep them in check.

DESPITE new measures implemented by Land Transport Authority (LTA) in January to improve passenger safety in lorries, rules continue to be ignored.
On the 10-foot Toyota Dyna, 17 people were in the lorry meant to sit only 13 at the back.
Under LTA guidelines, if lorries exceed less than 25 per cent of its allocated capacity, a fine of $500 will be imposed, and if they exceed 25 per cent, the violator will be prosecuted in court, which could lead to a maximum jail term of six months.

Two died on the spot while another died later at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), where 14 others were sent for treatment of injuries. All 17 are Chinese nationals and work for CREC Construction Pte Ltd. The lorry skidded and slammed into the metal railings of the divider separating the slip road to Thomson Road and the PIE. When ambulances arrived at 8.10am, two men were found in a drain along the divider, one of whom was already dead.
Most of the vehicle damage was on its left side, with the passenger door smashed in, and windshield and left cargo side railing knocked off. Injured workers said those with more serious injuries had sat towards the left of the vehicle. Traffic police closed off a lane on the slip road and the left-most lane of PIE, causing a rush-hour traffice jam till the lorry was lifted by two tow trucks at 10.45am. Eight of the injured who suffered abrasions and simple arm fractures, including the driver, had been discharged from TTSH. Six others were warded, some for trauma and others for minor abrasions, but all are in stable condition.

Fourteen others were injured in Tuesday's horrific accident. In the Jurong Port accident, there were no serious casualties, according to the company's boss Simon Subra.
Two of the 35 workers from Fining Engineers and Contractors were sent to the National University Hospital for head injuries and treated as outpatients. Another four escaped with scrapes and bruises and have since been discharged. The company deals with 'the transportation of several goods" and provides moving services as well, said Mr Subra. He added that the driver of the truck has been driving for about 40 years and this is the first time the company has had such an incident.
