2 former directors fined in kickback probe

Posted: 07 February 2012 1358 hrs

SINGAPORE: Two former directors of Geko Maritime Private Limited were fined S$25,000 each for receiving kickbacks.

33-year-old Kwek Kiok Khiang and 59-year-old Lim Toon Teck had allowed the company to deduct S$50 from the monthly salaries of each of its ten foreign employees, and collect S$500 from each employee as a form of financial guarantee.

Each director faced 10 charges under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act (EFMA) with another 20 charges taken into consideration.

Receiving kickbacks is a breach of the Work Pass regulations and an offence under the EFMA.

Those found guilty will be punishable with a fine of up to S$5,000, or a jail term of up to six months, or both. Those convicted will also be barred from employing foreign workers in future.
